WABBLENAUT
WABBLENAUT is a game where you build your pathways and explore the world by building bridges out of words
warning : alt tabbing crashes the game sometimes i will fix this after the jam is over
controls
- WASD to walk on the board
- left click to pick up and place letters, and to interact with objects on the board
- right click a letter on the board to return it to your inventory
- right click on letters in your inventory to discard them
- space/enter to confirm a word
- click on an empty space and move your mouse in the direction you want to type to type letters instead of dragging & dropping
made for GMTKjam! the theme was "loop" so i wanted to have some fun with game loops, where here you go between playing scrabble, then playing around a mini overworld

i have become really addicted to this. i wish there was a save game option. how does the choosing first vowel upgrade work?
:^)
Incredibly absorbing without the regular combat of scrabble (against other players). Thanks for making this!
great game! very fun to play :) awesome work
I'm so confused. How does one fish? Where am I trying to reach first, the locked chest or the fishing spots???
Fishing spots, so you get enough letters to reach the chests. If you already have enough letters, then you may reach a chest directly, before going to fishing spots. But you'll eventually need letters to reach elsewhere.
if you put a bunch of letters down, pick up more, then return the old ones you can get infinite letters by doing that over and over
The scrabble-like exploration of an overworld is a cool concept. And clearly it held my attention, since I was 314 tiles in when I scrolled down to see the comments (at which point the game crashed).
I think it has promise! There are the bugs (the crashing; the surrounded chest that still says "7/8"), possibly some QoL issues (I kept trying to fish when I was just a little too far onto an adjacent tile; sometimes the letter draws felt imbalanced), and of course it would be nice if the game had more to it (an exit to a next level? a store for spending fish?). But it's a really solid core of a game.
It is a lovely game. The game also crashed when I scrolled down to read the comments. Got to 150 tiles right before that,
Didn't have that many vowels at this stage of the game and I thought it was intended. I tried to get rid of the V,X,Zs: Vibes, Ox, Toxic, Maze, but vowels kept coming.
Really enjoyable! I wished there was a way to export the map/ current progress whenever the player wants.
Ok, game review: First off, I hope you can fix the alt-tab crash bug :( If you're still working on this, that is. The game has crashed four times on me, always when I switch to a different tab and one time because I scrolled down in the page. I only got 10-15 mins into the game each time, I didn't manage to unlock anything in the store.
I don't know if it helps, but I get the following in the browser console when it crashes: TypeError: AudioListener.setPosition: Argument 3 is not a finite floating-point value.
Other than that, it's really fun! Very fun concept and engaging game loop. I did get stuck on the fishing mechanic, I didn't realize I was supposed to do that. On my first playthrough, I got to the chest on the left and got the fish, and I assumed the fishing spots would give me the same fish so I didn't think to try them out.
Also, it's possible to get stuck out of certain spots, for example on my second playthough I tried to get to the chest on top of the blob creature, but I placed a column to its left before I knew it had to be surrounded. That may be intended, though, as it's fairly quick to restart the game!
I do think it's really relaxing and a fun idea. I'd play it to the end if it didn't crash! With word games like this, I usually leave them open in the background and play them little by little over a few hours as a little break, and this didn't quite work here.
Looking forward to seeing what you make in the future!
Something's not working for me! How do I get more letters after I use up the initial ones! I just run out and have to sit there
new letters can be fished up out of the fishing spots!
A very relaxing game! Word games are always fun, but you've also managed to create a nice little overworld where we can travel and win fish! Great stuff, thank you for making this game!
If you haven't played Wormspell, I really recommend it, it's also a travelling word spelling game, you'll like it!
this is so much fun, i was very irresponsible with my time. though my attempted chest opening did get stuck at 7/8 even though i had a letter in every ajacent spot and that ended my run
The same happened (my 2nd run). I suspect it is when too many letters are added simultaneously and the 7/8 is calculated using a value + instead of Boolean True/False of the surrounding cells to check if the chest-opening condition is fulfilled.
